Most students are happy to oblige and will quickly launch into a long meandering summary that is punctuated by frequent "and thens." In fact, unless we teach them other ways, most kids only know how to talk about books by recounting what they’re about. I often said my students were suffering from a bad case of summary-itis. But we can’t discredit summaries altogether. After all, if we haven’t read the book, the best way for us to understand what it’s about while also checking our child’s comprehension of it is to ask out child to summarize it. Below you will find four summarizing strategies that require increasingly sophisticated levels of analysis.
